The First Fallen offers a sensitive look back at the early days of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil through the eyes of three friends.

It’s New Year’s Eve, 1983. Suzano, who recently returned from Paris, plans to spend the celebration with his sister and nephew but he isn’t feeling well. He’s not sure if he’s well enough to go to the club to see Rose return to the stage and sing again—a monumental event being filmed by Humberto. As the year progresses so does Suzano’s illness and the three have withdrawn to a ranch where they capture on camera their attempts to study the disease, amid moments of both fear and joy.
