We wish to acknowledge this land on which the Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival is held. As you consider watching a film with us, we encourage you to reflect on the land that you are on, who the traditional keepers of the land are, what the treaty relationship is, or if it’s unceded territory. TIFF Bell Lightbox is located on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, the Wendat, and the Haudenosaunee.

The territory is within the lands protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Toronto (also known as Tkaronto) is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to work on this land.

A core value of Inside Out’s guiding strategic plan is that Inside Out is accessible and inclusive: a safe and welcoming space for filmmakers and film fans from around the world. We respect, reflect and celebrate our communities’ diversity and strive for inclusion of all persons.

Reel Access Project + Accessibility Resource Guide

Funded by the Toronto Arts Council, this 2019-2020 project brought together film festival representatives and disability activists/consultants to address obstacles to accessibility at film festivals in Toronto.

The project held a well-attended Discovery Forum in May of 2019 to bring the discussion of accessibility to the foreground. A follow-up in-person forum planned for 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19 and replaced with an industry survey on accessibility improvements. The project also created an Accessibility Resource Guide for film festivals.

The Film Festival Guide to Access is designed to get you in a creative mindset and inspire you to transform how you think about disability and build accessibility at your organization.

The disability experience is an experience that all of us share. Whether you’re disabled today or will eventually become disabled with age, disability is part and parcel of being human and, for many, it’s a vital part of who we are.
