This documentary looks at gay life in contemporary Africa. In Woubi chéri, the “branchés” gays of the Ivory Coast tell their own stories, bringing a new sense of gay and lesbian life as it has never been seen before – its humour, emotions, politics and traditions, its pleasure and pain.

Our characters take us on an exploration of their cultural and sexual identities, leading us into their world as they see and experience it. The parameters are different and the experiences of homosexual Africans change the notion of the what is “gay”, what is “straight” for those in the West as well.

Woubi chéri est un documentaire qui nous fait partager la vie amoureuse de quelques homosexuels de Côte-d’Ivoire. Les Woubi et les Yossis (les folles et leurs hommes dans le dialecte homosexuel local) de la Côte-d’Ivoire s’y racontent et nous racontent – entre humour, émotion, révolte et tradition – leur quotidien. Ils nous font partager leurs joies et leurs douleurs, levant le voile sur une vie “gay” telle qu’elle n’a jamais été montrée jusqu’à ce jour. Précédé par deux courts métrages et suivi par une discussion.

Q&A with Cynthia-Laure Etom and Mohamed Pierre Ndoye

This short film is based on a true story. It explores my experience of attempting to have a Francophone Black man released from jail, a man who has been detained in Toronto for over six years for immigration reasons. The short film denounces the fact that Canada did not yet establish time limits for immigration detention, even when a person has never been found guilty of a crime in Canada.

Ce court-métrage est fondé sur une histoire vraie. Il explore mon expérience d’avoir tenté de faire libérer de prison un homme francophone noir détenu à Toronto pour des raisons d’immigration pendant plus de six ans. Le court-métrage dénonce le fait que le Canada n’ait pas encore établi de limite à la durée de la détention d’immigration, même lorsqu’une personne n’a jamais été trouvée coupable d’un crime au Canada.

Monsieur – dir. Thomas Ducastel – France, 2019

Georgie and Stan are two friends living in Lens. Georgie dreams of the stage and Stan of cinema. When Georgie learns that his idol will be present at the “Monsieur Pas-de-Calais” competition, he asks Stan, who is shooting the video of the event, to help him to enter the competition. But the rush of events will bring to light the underlying tensions of their relationship.

Georgie et Stan sont deux amis vivant à Lens. Georgie rêve de scène et Stan de cinéma. Quand Georgie apprend que son idole sera présent au concours Monsieur Pas-de-Calais, il demande à Stan, qui réalise la vidéo de l’événement, de l’aider à intégrer le concours. Mais la précipitation des événements fait éclater au grand jour les tensions sous-jacentes de leur relation.
